Weitsman started a career in 1989 working in a Manhattan art gallery, Hirschl & Alder Folk. In 1991, he opened the American Folk Art Gallery in Greenwich Village. After losing his sister to cancer, he moved to his hometown to work at his family’s company Ben Weitsman & Son.
In 1995, he became the vice president of Ben Weitsman & Son. It was in his family’s company that h gained an interest in processing side scrap metal. In 1997, he founded his own company Upstate Shredding. He first opened the company at the Tioga County Industrial Park in Owego, New York.
After his father retired, he purchased his family’s company in 2005. In 2009, he purchased an 11-acre scrap yard from Peter Matlow in Solvay, New York. He also acquired more scrap yards in New Castle between 2012 and 2016. In addition, he purchased Empire Recycling in Watertown, New York.
Aside from his company, Weitsman together with his wife has invested in real estate in Skaneateles. In 2014, his wife Kim re-opened the Krebs restaurant which was founded in 1899. In 2018, Weitsman began the construction of his new Mexican restaurant Elephant and the Dove while still developing a Sushi bar in Owego, New York.
Weitsman’s company won the Tioga County’s Business of the Year award in March 2010. Upstate Shredding won Scrap Company of the Year by American Metal Market in 2015 and 2016. As a philanthropist, he has donated to causes such as ALS and cancer research, youth, education, healthcare, and community services.
