He represented Florida as a delegate at every Republican National Convention held from 1976 until 2008. In 2011, Cardenas was elected the chairperson of the American Conservative Union, with then-chairman David Keene’s retirement. He resigned from the position of American Conservative Union Chairman on June 1st, 2014. The position was taken by Matt Schlapp who was the fundraiser and senior council for Jeb Bush Campaigns.
