Robinson joined English Heritage as a Team Leader and Inspector of Ancient Monuments In 2009. He has worked for Historic England since the split of English Heritage in 2015 as the Principal Adviser in Heritage at Risk for the East Midlands.

In 2005, he first appeared on the Channel 4 program Time Team, on a dig at Northborough. Robinson went on to make a further 11 appearances, with his last in 2011 at Litlington, Cambridgeshire.

He also appeared on the episode “East” of the 2009 BBC one program Rivers with Griff Rhys Jones. Furthermore, Robinson presented the four-part BBC Four series The Flying Archaeologist in 2010.
