April 1984 marked Keller’s entry with The New York Times. The I-Can’t-Believe-I’m-A-Hawk Club, an article by Keller, explains Keller’s support for military action during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Keller penned the editorial “Why Colin Powell Should Go” two days after the invasion, calling for the US Secretary of State to resign due to the failure of his diplomatic approach at the UN. Keller, on the other hand, had a lot more sympathy for Deputy Defence Secretary Paul Wolfowitz and referred to him as the “Sunshine Warrior.” 

He was also awarded the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting in 1988 for his “in-depth and resourceful coverage of events in the USSR.” That is, in the Soviet Union in the final year before the upheavals of 1989 in Central and Eastern Europe, the year it formed its Congress of People’s Deputies.

On June 23, 2006, Keller and The Times also released an article about a different secret initiative to track monetary transactions linked to terrorism via the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT), which is situated in Brussels, Belgium. Despite applicable laws that prohibit disclosing classified information that could threaten national security, especially in a time of war, many commentators as well as some elected officials, such as U.S. Congressman Peter T. King, called for the U.S. Justice Department to prosecute The New York Times and the anonymous sources who leaked the existence of this counter-terrorism program.
