After 30 years in radio and television news, he has learned one thing: don’t yell at a guy with a gun. He has a habit of getting caught up in the moment, especially during ‘unscheduled’ interviews. He’s been cursed, yelled at, hip-checked, hung up on, threatened, and shoved out the door. And, yes, there was that time when a man came out of his house brandishing a gun and yelled at him—and he yelled back.
He never imagined himself as an investigative reporter. He wanted to do sports play-by-play when he first started in radio in 1991. One of his childhood heroes, St. Louis Cardinals broadcaster Jack Buck, would inspire him.
He began working as a crime beat reporter for KCCI-TV 8 in Des Moines in 1998. He joined the special projects unit at WDAF-TV (FOX 4) in Kansas City in 2000. In 2004, he joined the investigative team at WITI-TV FOX6 News. He has had the good fortune to work for a station that considers investigative reporting to be one of the pillars of our news operation.
