Ayala was a volunteer for Barack Obama’s reelection campaign in 2012. In 2017, she ran for the Virginia House of Delegates for the 51st district. In June 2017, she won the primary election of the Democratic nomination for the 51st district of the Virginia House of Delegates against Ken Boddye.
She also won in the general election defeating four-term Republican incumbent Richard L. Anderson. She became one of the three Hispanic women to be elected to the House. The other two are Kelly Fowler and Elizabeth Guzman. In 2017, Ayala was one of the organizers of the Women’s March against Donald Trump.
Ayala has served as the Chief Co-Sponsor of four bills that were passed in 2019. She announced her candidacy for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia in the 2021 Virginia lieutenant gubernatorial election in July 2020. The same year in December, Ayala announced she would not seek reelection to her House of Delegates seat. She became the Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia in June 2021.
