John Sterling Career

For the 1970–71 NBA season, Sterling served as the play-by-play analyst for the then-Baltimore Bullets in Baltimore, where he started his broadcasting career. He performed as the play-by-play commentator for Morgan State University football from 1971 until 1978.

As a talk show presenter for WMCA, Sterling entered the New York media scene in 1971. The WHA’s New York Raiders, the WFL’s New York Stars, the NHL’s New York Islanders (where he was teamed with Bob Lawrence), and the ABA/New NBA’s York/New Jersey Nets later hired him as their radio announcer (where he was paired mainly with Mike DeTomasso). Along with co-hosting TV segments with Mel Allen, Sterling spent a period of time working for the Yankees as the pre-game host on WMCA and WINS radio. 

Furthermore, Sterling and WFAN agreed to a new contract on October 18, 2021, with the possibility of a changed schedule for 2022. On June 6, 2022, Sterling made the announcement that he will begin working a reduced schedule in the second half of the MLB season, mostly by skipping road games outside of the northeastern United States. He will keep taking road visits to Citi Field, Oriole Park at Camden Yards, and Fenway Park.
