Her dad was from the Democratic Republic of Congo, and her mom a college professor and nutritionist from Guyana; the pair initially met in graduate school at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Reid was raised Methodist. She has two siblings; one sister and one brother.

Her father was an engineer who was mostly absent from the family; her parents ultimately separated and her father retired to the Congo. Joy was raised mainly in Denver, Colorado, till the age of 17, when her mother succumbed to breast cancer and she relocated to Flatbush, Brooklyn, to live with an aunt.
