He started painting while still a teenager and attended Detroit’s Centre for Creative Studies in the 1970s. Wyland’s connection with whales began when he was 14. This was during a visit with his family to Laguna Beach, California where he saw the ocean for the first time in his life. He witnessed several gray whales migrating down the California coast towards Mexico. Wyland decided to move to Laguna Beach in 1977. Wyland painted his first 100 Whaling Walls in 1981 at the Laguna Beach Parking lot.

He is the founder and president of Wyland Foundation, a nonprofit organization which helps children rediscover the wonder of the ocean through art” in 1993.
