On October 18, 1954, the station went on the air on VHF channel 8 from a transmitter at its original studios on TV Road in the Back Swamp section north of Quinby (though with a Florence address). Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company owned it (later becoming Jefferson-Pilot, now part of Lincoln Financial Group). It was the second television station owned by Jefferson Standard, following WBTV in Charlotte, North Carolina.
WBTW’s call letters were derived from the letter “W,” which is the next letter in the alphabet after “V.” Although the two stations were programmed independently, they shared a microwave system built-in 1959. It moved to VHF channel 13 on September 17, 1962, while its previous channel was re-allocated to High Point, North Carolina as WGHP.
