Taylor Heinicke is a quarterback for the National Football League’s Washington Football Team (NFL). Heinicke attended Collins Hill High School in Lawrenceville, Georgia, and played football for head coach Kevin Reach. As a junior, he was an all-state selection after leading Collins Hill to a 10–4 record and a trip to the Class AAAAA semi-finals. Heinicke was named Georgia’s Old Spice National Player of the Year as a senior. The award is given to 50 high school varsity football players each year.

He was also named the Gwinnett Daily Post’s Offensive Player of the Year following his record-breaking season in which he threw for 4,218 yards, the second-most in state history, and 44 touchdowns, the third-most in Georgia history, setting Gwinnett County single-season passing yard and touchdown records.

Heinicke accepted an athletic scholarship to attend Old Dominion University (ODU) in 2011, where he played football for the Old Dominion Monarchs from 2011 to 2014. In 2011, Heinicke took over as the Monarchs’ starter. He led the Monarchs to a 10–3 record in the Colonial Athletic Association that season, but they were eliminated in the second round of the FCS playoffs by Georgia Southern. He ran for 363 yards and four touchdowns while passing for 2,385 yards, 25 touchdowns, and one interception. He also punted four times for a total of 170 yards. Heinicke was named All-CAA 3rd Team Offense and National Freshman Performer of the Year. Old Dominion finished the Football Championship Subdivision season ranked tenth.

Heinicke led the Monarchs to an 11–2 record in 2012, losing in the quarterfinals to Georgia Southern once more. Heinicke set an FCS record with 5,076 yards, 44 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions that season. He gained 470 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground. He also punted 11 times for 475 yards.
