Bergman made the decision to leave UCLA after landing a role in an equity-waiver production performed outside of school. She began acting in high school productions, obtained representation for on-camera commercials, cinema, and television, and spent several years studying privately with acting instructor Harry Mastrogeorge. At the age of 16, Bergman landed her first professional acting role in the Elizabeth Taylor–starring television film Return Engagement.

Bergman joined a tiny firm that had been launched six months after graduating from college. She had a TV audition for an exercise show, and she was cast in the part. She could dance, laugh, sing, or do impressions, but she was recruited for her “beautiful body.” But the agency shut down less than a week after she started her new position. Bergman declared, “Everything broke down. I realized that I was not making any progress. Maybe I should give up my stupid fantasy of being this famous celebrity and find a real job instead.” Bergman first played Rachel in the UK version of the 1990 Signing Time series until her demise.

Bergman participated in a radio broadcast honoring Disneyland’s 45th anniversary on the morning of November 11, 1999. When she was on the phone with a friend around 9 p.m., she was last seen alive. Her husband and his friend John Bell arrived home an hour and twenty minutes later to discover that she had shot herself in the head with a Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun. At 10:18 p.m., she was pronounced dead in the hospital. She was 38 years old.
